6 Ways to Take the Stress Out of Maths Homework

February 21, 2020

Most Aussie kids would rather be out playing cricket or watching TV than doing their maths homework. As a parent, it often falls to you to remind your child when homework is due and help them finish it.

In this blog we’re going to share some tips to avoid last-minute homework stress. But first, an important question:

Why is maths homework important?

As a parent, you want to give your child every advantage in life and at school. Homework is one such advantage that is often overlooked. Not only does it reinforce classroom content, it also develops independent learning skills.

So how do you take the stress out of maths homework? It starts with being organised and making homework interesting.

Tips to organise homework time

1. Set up a homework area

Turn a corner of the living room or study into a comfortable homework area with everything your child needs: pens, pencils, paper, calculator, ruler etc.

2. Stick to a weekly schedule

Set aside at least half an hour each day. If your child has no set homework, encourage them to read or complete a Matharoo maths worksheet.

3. Use real-world examples

Current affairs and solving real life problems are effective ways to engage your child in the maths homework content.

4. Let them figure it out

Guide your child but avoid jumping in with the answer. This will help them develop valuable critical thinking skills.

5. Set the example

Let them see you using the skills in real life. Ask them to help with the weekly budget or calculate how far they ran in the weekend footy game.

6. Make it fun

Games, mini rewards, encouraging words, and pop culture maths problems are all great ways to engage young minds in maths homework.
